Wednesday, 17 December brought sad news from County Cork, with the announcement that leading National Hunt sire Blue Bresil has passed away at 20 years of age. A talented performer at the track, the French-bred star went on to sire a host of Grade 1 stars, including one of the greatest hurdlers of the modern era.
High-Level Performer Under Both Codes
Sired by the Listed flat winner Smadoun, and out of a low-key mare in Miss Recif, Blue Bresil began his racing career in a one-mile contest at Bordeaux Le Bouscat on 8 November 2007. His first win arrived 16 days later in a 1m1½f event at the same track. Later tried in Group 1 company, he was out of his depth in the 2008 Prix du Jockey Club and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, but twice finished third in Group 2 company.

It was a similar story when Blue Bresil switched to hurdles in 2009. Well beaten in the Grade 1 Prix Alain du Breil, he finished a close second in Grade 3 and Grade 2 company. While Blue Bresil himself never managed to strike at the highest level, several of his offspring did.

A Star at Stud
Blue Bresil ended his racing career on a high with a 1m7f win at Chantilly before retiring to stud at the end of the 2009 season. Initially standing at Haras de la Croix Sonnet in France, he moved to Yorton Farm Stud in Powys, Wales, in 2016. His final relocation then came in 2020, when he took up residence in County Cork. Initially offered at €1,500, his price had increased to €8,000 by 2020, with all subsequent fees remaining private.
That rising price was fully justified by the outstanding exploits of his progeny at the track. At the time of his passing, Blue Bresil had sired 23 individual winners at Listed level or above, including eight Grade 1 scorers.
Blue Bresil: Four of the Best
From a long list of progeny who have competed over obstacles, four in particular stand out.
Constitution Hill
This Nicky Henderson star may have hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent times. However, even if he never wins another race, he will still go down as one of the greatest two-mile hurdlers of the 21st century – if not the greatest. Climbing to a mark of 175 on the back of a 10-race winning streak between 2021 and 2025, he won the 2022 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the 2023 Champion Hurdle by a combined total of 31 lengths.
A league above his Grade 1 rivals when at his peak, he is comfortably the greatest horse ever sired by Blue Bresil.
Royale Pagaille
While Constitution Hill leads the way over hurdles, this Venetia Williams star heads the Blue Bresil chasing cast. A veteran of four Cheltenham Gold Cups, Royale Pagaille saved his best form for Haydock – winning the Peter Marsh Chase twice and landing back-to-back editions of the Grade 1 Betfair Chase in 2023 and 2024.
Blue Lord
Sporting the double green of Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, this Willie Mullins star was one of the leading lights on the two-mile chase scene in 2022. Successful in the Irish Arkle and Barberstown Castle Novice Chase, his peak performance came when cruising 11 lengths clear of Captain Guinness and Chacun Pour Soi in the Paddy’s Rewards Club Chase at Leopardstown.
L’Autonomie
The pick of Blue Bresil’s French performers is this Francois Nicolle-trained hurdler. A winner 17 times between 2018 and 2022, he struck twice at the highest level, including a 30-length romp in the Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil. At the time of his retirement in 2022, he had earned over £1.2m for connections.
And Four to Follow
Blue Bresil may have passed away, but many of his offspring are yet to hit the track or are in the early stages of their careers. Whether anything of Constitution Hill calibre emerges from his final crops remains to be seen, but the following quartet have at least made an encouraging start.
- Coutach – This Gordon Elliott runner took a couple of runs to warm up before winning a Perth bumper in fine style. Two from two since tackling hurdles, his most recent effort saw him win the US Champion Hurdle at Far Hills
- Samba Train – Labelled an “exciting animal” by trainer Enda Bolger, Samba Train has won two of four Bumper outings and reportedly jumps well at home
- Laguna Beach – Hailing from the yard of Nicky Henderson and sporting the silks of Michael Buckley, Laguna Beach is no Constitution Hill, but he may be up to winning a race or two. Undone by his jumping on his hurdles debut at Sandown, he improved significantly to break his duck at Hereford in December 2025
- Aqua Bleu – The pick of the Blue Bresil three-year-olds to hit the track in 2025 is this Warren Greatrex gelding. A little unlucky to finish second on debut, he put that right next time with an effortless 12-length victory in a Junior Hurdle at Doncaster
In announcing the news of his death, Glenview Stud issued a statement, saying:
“Blue Bresil will be greatly missed by everyone at Glenview and Rathbarry Studs, but his legacy will live on through his progeny. He leaves his stamp as one of the leading National Hunt stallions of his time.”
