Last Friday, the July Festival rolled on into its second day with a cracking seven-race card of action. Fittingly, on the track’s official Ladies’ Day, the fillies and mares took centre stage in the two Group contests on the card.
The Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes was first up, as a field of talented juveniles tackled the straight six furlongs. Arriving on the back of an impressive win in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, Karl Burke’s Venetian Sun was the red-hot favourite to win, starting at odds of 2/5. And win she did, although those who took the skinny odds may have suffered a few palpitations as her lead diminished to a neck at the line. With the appetiser out of the way, attention turned to the Group 1 feature of the Falmouth Stakes.
A fascinating field of eight lined up for the 2025 edition of this £275,000 contest. Each of the eight runners had something to recommend them, but the market focused on a trio who had performed with credit at the Royal Ascot Festival in June.
Royal Ascot Rivalry Renewed But Youngster Topped the Market
Having produced one of the most impressive finishing bursts of the meeting to claim the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes, Crimson Advocate arrived riding the crest of a wave. However, the Wathnan Racing-owned four-year-old sat only third in the betting list. On that Ascot outing, she looked the one to beat – but could she finish so effectively on this straight course?
Cinderella’s Dream was the horse immediately behind Crimson Advocate at Ascot but sat ahead of her rival in the betting for the Falmouth Stakes rematch. Only once finishing outside the first two in 10 career outings and a winner in Britain, Dubai, and the USA, she arrived with a rock-solid profile. Could she be the filly to hand Charlie Appleby a first success in the race?
Despite the obvious claims of Crimson Advocate and Cinderella’s Dream, strong market support propelled the Aidan O’Brien-trained January to the head of the market. On pedigree and connections, she boasted obvious claims, with the nine-pound weight-for-age allowance also working in her favour. However, having scored at no higher than Listed level and finished third in the Coronation Stakes last time, she would need to up her game to claim this valuable pot.
Classic Winner Overlooked?
It is a testament to the quality of the race that the only Classic winner in the field was the fourth choice of punters. Roger Varian’s Elmalka was zero from five since causing a 28/1 shock in the 2024 1,000 Guineas – could a return to a straight mile in this part of the world see her bounce back?
The unexposed Elwateen and talented but inconsistent Running Lion were others to note from further down the betting list and looked the most likely to produce a shock result. However, in the end, the race came down to a straight fight between the market leaders.
Cinderella the Belle of Falmouth Stakes Ball
With the pacesetters falling away at the two-furlong pole, the closing stages set up a thrilling battle between the three market principals. January loomed large against the stands side rail, with Cinderella’s Dream making her move in the centre of the track, and Crimson Advocate switched into the clear on the far side.
Moving into the final furlong, January looked like the most likely winner, with Crimson Advocate failing to quicken in the manner she had at Ascot. However, the sustained finishing effort from Cinderella’s Dream proved tougher to deny. With January looking for the line, William Buick drew level inside the final 100 yards and edged clear for a famous half-length success.
